The short answer
Claude Chat is the basic conversation interface at claude.ai — you type, Claude responds. It’s the right tool for one-off questions, quick drafts, and exploring ideas. For repeatable work that uses the same context every time, use a Claude Project instead.
What you can do in Claude Chat
Open claude.ai, log in, type a message. That’s it. Within a single conversation you can:
- Upload PDFs, images, spreadsheets, code files
- Ask follow-up questions that build on earlier ones
- Get Claude to write code, draft emails, summarise documents, analyse data
- Use built-in tools when enabled — web search, file creation, image generation via Gamma
A conversation can be very long. Claude remembers everything in the current chat until you hit the context limit (around 200,000 tokens, roughly 500 pages of text).
When to use Chat vs a Project
Use Claude Chat when:
– It’s a one-off task (“summarise this PDF”, “explain this error message”)
– You’re exploring or thinking out loud
– The context doesn’t repeat — different inputs each time
Use a Claude Project when:
– You’ll do the same kind of task multiple times with different inputs
– You have reference material (brand voice docs, ICP profiles, templates) that should always be available
– You want the system prompt and knowledge to persist between conversations
The mistake most people make is using Chat for everything. They re-paste the same context into every new conversation. Six months in, they’ve typed the same brand-voice instructions three hundred times. That’s what Projects are for.
The free tier vs Pro
Claude Chat works on the free tier with limits — fewer messages per day, no file uploads on some plans, smaller context window. Claude Pro (₹1,800/month or roughly $20/month, billed in USD) unlocks:
- Higher daily message limits
- Larger file uploads (up to 30 MB per file, 100 pages per PDF)
- Access to Claude Projects
- Priority access during peak load
- Earlier access to new features
For business use, Pro is essentially required. The free tier is fine for trying Claude out; it’s not enough for daily work.
What Chat doesn’t do
Two things worth knowing.
Chat doesn’t remember between conversations. Start a new chat and Claude has no idea what you discussed yesterday. If you need that, save important conversations as Claude Projects, or copy what you need into a Project’s knowledge files.
Chat can’t run on a schedule. It’s reactive — you type, Claude replies. For things that should happen automatically (a daily digest, a Monday morning briefing), you need Cowork or n8n. Chat is the wrong tool.
