The short answer
A Claude Project is a folder of knowledge files paired with a system prompt that tells Claude how to behave. Every conversation inside that Project starts with the knowledge already loaded and the instructions already given — you skip the setup and get straight to work.
Why this matters
In Claude Chat, every conversation starts cold. If you want Claude to know your brand voice, your ICP, your product details, or your style preferences, you have to paste that context in every single time.
A Project solves this. You load the context once. Every conversation inherits it.
The difference is the same as opening a fresh document versus opening one with your letterhead, signature, and standard clauses already in place.
What goes into a Project
Three things:
Knowledge files. Up to about 200,000 tokens of reference material — PDFs, markdown files, text documents. Brand guidelines, ICP profiles, product documentation, past examples of your writing, SOPs. Claude reads all of this automatically when you start a new conversation.
System prompt. A set of instructions that defines how Claude should behave inside this Project. “You are an executive assistant. Always respond in bullet points. Never use emoji.” That kind of thing. The system prompt is what gives the Project its personality.
Conversations. Every chat you have inside the Project is saved together. You can browse past conversations, search them, and use them as context for new questions.
When to make a Project
Make a Project when you find yourself doing one of these:
- Re-pasting the same context into Claude every time you start a chat
- Running the same kind of task with different inputs (e.g. drafting LinkedIn posts, summarising reports, writing proposals)
- Wanting Claude to maintain a consistent voice or format across uses
- Sharing reusable AI workflows with your team
A useful test: if you’d write the same first message at the start of three different chats, that’s a Project waiting to happen.
What a Project costs
Claude Projects are included with Claude Pro (₹1,800/month). There’s no separate Project fee. The only cost ceiling is the knowledge file size — total content across all files in a Project caps at roughly 200,000 tokens.
You can have unlimited Projects on Pro.
A few practical patterns
Brand voice Project. Knowledge: 10–20 of your best past posts/emails. System prompt: “Match this voice. Skeptical of hype. Indian English. No emoji.” Use it every time you draft public-facing copy.
Customer support Project. Knowledge: product docs, FAQ, past tickets. System prompt: “Answer like a senior support engineer. Concise. Cite the doc you’re drawing from.” Use it for drafting first-pass replies.
Proposal writing Project. Knowledge: 5 of your best past proposals, your pricing structure, case studies. System prompt: “Write proposals in our standard structure. Always include the assumptions section.” Use it whenever a new RFP comes in.
You’ll find your own patterns within a week of trying it.
The mistake to avoid
Don’t dump everything into one Project. A Project that contains your brand voice AND your customer data AND your code style guide will give worse output than three focused Projects, because Claude has to figure out which context applies to which question.
Make Projects narrow. One purpose, one personality, one set of reference material.
